Sustainability and Climate Change

🌱 Our Commitment to Sustainability and Climate Action

At Emneth Nursery School, we believe that even the smallest hands can make a big difference. As educators of the next generation, we are deeply committed to fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility within our nursery and wider community.

🌍 Why It Matters

Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. By teaching children to care for the planet from an early age, we help nurture environmentally conscious citizens who will grow up with the values and knowledge to protect our world.

🌿 What We’re Doing

We’ve taken meaningful steps to reduce our environmental impact and promote sustainable practices:

  • Eco-Friendly Learning: We incorporate nature-based play and learning into our curriculum, helping children connect with the environment in joyful and meaningful ways.
  • Waste Reduction: We actively reduce, reuse, and recycle materials in our nursery, and encourage families to do the same at home.
  • Green Spaces: Our outdoor areas are designed to support biodiversity, with bug hotels, bird feeders, and planting activities that teach children about ecosystems.
  • Energy Awareness: We’re working to reduce energy use in our nursery and teach children simple habits like turning off lights and conserving water.
  • Community Engagement: We partner with local organisations to support green initiatives and involve families in sustainability-themed events and projects.

We welcome ideas and support from our families and community. Together, we can build a brighter, cleaner future for our children.

Small Steps, Big Impact

Local Milk

We’re now sourcing our milk from Bramblebee Farm — fresher for our little ones and kinder to the planet. By choosing local, we’re reducing our carbon footprint and supporting nearby farmers.

By using locally produced milk in reusable glass bottles instead of 2-litre plastic bottles we are reducing plastic waste by an average of 35 bottles every week – that’s 1,480 bottles every year!

We took part in switch off fortnight. By remembering to turn off lights and switch things off at the plugs, we’ve reduced our electricity use from approx. 70 units a day to just 52 units.

That’s a huge difference over time.

We’re now separating our food waste!
Less landfill waste means fewer methane emissions, and food scraps become compost for healthy soil.

Our sustainability shed is a special space where we can collect and store reusable resources and recycled materials for our children’s creative learning and play. We now have a Clothes Bank!
Families and other people in the community can donate their unwanted clothes and give them a second life.

We choose seasonal, local produce when possible to keep our meals fresh, nutritious, and sustainable. By supporting local growers, we reduce food miles, cut emissions, and celebrate the best of each season. We’ve chosen a locally grown Christmas tree because it’s better for the environment and our community.

We’ve installed water butts to collect rainwater, helping us reuse nature’s gift to keep our plants thriving. Every drop matters—and together, we’re making our garden greener and more sustainable!
